St. Lucia's dramatic twin coastal peaks, the Pitons, soar 2,000 feet up from the sea, sheltering magnificent rain forests where wild orchids, giant ferns, and birds of paradise flourish. Brilliantly-plumed tropical birds abound, including endangered species like the indigenous St. Lucia parrot. The rainforest is broken only by verdant fields and orchards of banana, coconut, mango, and papaya trees.

Location

St. Lucia is located midway down the Eastern Caribbean island chain, north of Barbados and in between Martinique and St. Vincent.

Dining

St. Lucian chefs make good use of the island's bounty from the land and sea. Dine on grilled lobster or just-caught fish smothered in piquant Creole sauce, garden fresh vegetables and desserts laced with tropical fruit. The following areas are home to a wide variety of restaurants offering different cuisines in all price ranges:

Things to do

Take a guided hiking tour through the National Rain Forest, 19,000 acres of undisturbed valleys bordered by the towering Les Pitons mountains.

Visit St. Lucia's capital city, Castries, a bustling center for shopping and people watching.  Experience the diverse cultural heritage created by the combination of British, French, and African influences.  Here you will see the historic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, shaded by a 400 year old Samaan Tree.

Soufriere is the oldest city in St. Lucia, founded in 1746 and located at the western tip of the island.  The eclectic marketplace is decorated with colorful murals by local artists.   Don't miss the Soufriere Volcano, where you can drive right through the crater of a sleeping giant and swim in its bubbling hot springs.

Go to northern tip of St. Lucia to the tiny fishing village of Gros Islet, which transforms itself into a party for "Carnival" every Friday night.  Become a local and enjoy reggae music, culture, and a "jump up" - dancing in the street.

Swim at Diamond Falls, hidden among the fruit trees and featuring mineral baths once a favorite rejuvenation spot for King Louis XVI.  Close your eyes, let the cascading Falls spill over you, and imaging a world long ago.

Explore Pigeon Island, a nature park connected to St. Lucia by a causeway.  Miles of easy hiking trails lead you through ancient forts, historic artifacts, secluded beaches and beautiful scenery.  Pigeon Island is host for the world class St. Lucia Jazz Festival, held in May.

Take advantage of St. Lucia's diverse heritage and dine out at one of the island's excellent restaurants. From sophisticated international cuisine to local specialties like Pepperpot Stew, the island's unique character truly shines through its cuisine.
