Mexico
Vacation Information: Mexico is a federal republic
occupying 756,066 square miles in North America. The country shares a border with the
United States of America to the north and is bounded on two of its sides by expanses of
water - the Gulf of Mexico to the east and the Pacific Ocean on the west.
Over two thirds of Mexico's 98,553,000 people live in cities, contrary to the stereotype
of peasants and farmers often fostered by the movies. The country's capital, Mexico City,
is inhabited by over 15 million people and is one of the largest cities in the world. Over
95% of the population speak Spanish, which is the official national language. Indians make
up almost 25% of the population but less than 10% speak an indian language, of which there
are more than 50.
Mexico has many different climate zones, plant life and animals, combining species found
in North America and many often thought of as more exotic. Monkeys, jaguars, anteater,
parrots and tapirs can all be found in the forests of southern Mexico, pumas and coyotes
in the more mountainous areas, and snakes, armadillos and rabbits in the deserts.
Traveling to Mexico with Minors:
Minors traveling with only one parent or adults other
than their parents must have a notarized letter from the absent parent(s) authorizing them
to be taken out of the country. If the parent is deceased, a copy of the death certificate
will be required for check-in at the airport. Authorization Form for Minor to Travel
Mexico Proof of Citizenship:
Valid U.S. passport or a state issued
birth certificate, with a raised seal and a photo I.D. backup.
Marriage Certificate required in addition to proper Identification
In accordance with stricter security measures, it is required for all married female passengers, whose last name differs from their identification credentials must also provide a copy of their Marriage License Certificate when checking in at the airport for an international flight. Failure to provide the information can result in denied boarding.
Mexico Weather: The average temperature is 27° C (80° F) with more than 240 days of sunshine, and rain is rare. In summer the temperature goes higher, but an onshore breeze makes the climate enjoyable throughout the day.
Mexico Dress: Dress in Mexico is very casual with the accent on comfort. Remember to pack comfortable walking shoes. The activities at the hotels and the area dictate sporting clothes. In the evenings, you may want to dress up, but not too much. Rubber soled shoes are recommended for tours to archeological sites. Boots, long sleeve light cotton shirts and long trousers are best for those interested in jungle treks. A light jacket, shawl or sweater is advisable for the evenings of November, December and January.
Mexico Tipping: Tips in Mexico are generally 15%, tipping cab drivers is not expected, and tipping the maid in the hotel a couple of dollars a day (per room) is greatly appreciated.
