Cancun has everything to do under the sun!

Cancun:  Fourteen miles of pristine white beaches shaped like a number 7, crystalline waters and sultry nights passed sipping on the perfect margarita, right?   WRONG!  Oh!  are you every missing Cancun!  Home to archeological wonders, tranquil seas, a bountiful underwater world and a fascinating and inviting Mayan culture.  Cancun offers a complete Mexican vacation experience.

Perched on the northeast coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo, Cancun was once the cradle of the ancient Mayan civilization and is still considered by archeologists to be the gateway to the Mayan World (El Mundo Maya).  Mayan ruins - temples, time-telling devices and ritual sites - are everywhere, some smothered by lush jungle, others easily accessible (one pops up at the hotel golf course!).  There is even a Mayan ruin built into a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea, a ruggedly beautiful sight to behold.

Cancun Sports Enthusiasts:  Cancun will not disappoint, with its three world-class golf courses, two incredible coral reefs for snorkeling and scuba diving, unparalleled sport fishing, horseback riding in the jungle or along the beach - you name it, you can easily arrange it for your client in Cancun.

Beach:  If lying on a white-sand beach with the clear blue Caribbean lapping at suntanned toes is what you long for, then Cancun makes no apologies.  Some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean are in and around Cancun - they are the big reason why Cancun is the incredibly popular resort destination it is today.  Whatever your needs are, they can surely be met in Cancun's 22,000 plus rooms.

Cancun, Mexico

Every traveler knows that no matter what a destination offers in the way of attractions, the people are the true soul of a locale and can make or break a vacation.  In this way, Cancun is truly blessed, as the Mexican people who serve tourists are a patient, courteous people, with a unique and genuine kindness.

Cancun, a safe, beautiful locale, with an abundance of quality accommodations and enough activities to keep you busy for as long as you have time to spend.

Cancun Travel Information

Climate

A narrow 23-kilometer-long (14-mile) island section (Cancun Island) is lined with modern beachfront hotels surrounded by the Bahia de Mujeres (Bay of Women), the Caribbean Sea, and the Nichupte and Bojorquez lagoons. Each end of the boomerang-shaped islet is connected to the mainland by bridges, the southernmost connecting to the airport and the highway south. To the north, the bridge connects the Hotel Zone with Cancun 'Centro' on the mainland. 'El Centro' has colorful shops, restaurants and smaller hotels catering more to European and national tourism.

Drinking Water

Most hotels and restaurants use purified water, but you should be safe and drink bottled water whenever possible - don't let yourself get dehydrated because you're afraid to drink the water.

Golf Courses

At present, the Cancun Hotel Zone offers two championship 18-hole golf courses, and The Melia Cancun and Oasis Cancun each have short but fun Par 3 courses open to play for both guests and non-guests. Additionally, the Riviera Maya offers an 18-hole course in Playa del Carmen, and a 9-hole course in Puerto Aventuras.

Pok-Ta-Pok artistically incorporates hundreds of meters of dramatic shoreline and ancient Mayan ruins into a flat yet challenging course that winds past Cancun's saltwater lagoon and turquoise Caribbean waters. Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed this scenic 18-hole course, which is conveniently located in the heart of the Cancun Hotel Zone. Visitors will delight in the authentic Mayan temple situated next to one of its greens. Green fees range from $65 to $100 U.S. per person.

The Hilton Cancun Beach & Golf Resort is home to a Par 72, 18-hole championship course that reaches a total of 6,767 yards. Constructed by the Aoki Corp. (Japanese), the Hilton Course features challenging sand traps, a driving range, a golf shop with name brand equipment for both men and women, electric carts, equipment rental, and resident golf pros.

Dress

Dress in Cancun is very casual with the accent on comfort. Remember to pack comfortable walking shoes. The activities at the hotels and the area dictate sporting clothes. In the evenings, you may want to dress up, but not too much. Rubber soled shoes are recommended for tours to archeological sites. Boots, long sleeve light cotton shirts and long trousers are best for those interested in jungle treks. A light jacket, shawl or sweater is advisable for the evenings of November, December and January.

Handicap Information

Many of the hotels in the Cancun/Riviera Maya/Cozumel areas are wheelchair accessible, but travelers should check ahead in order to find out specific accommodations. Travelers with disabilities might consult Partners of the Americas (1424 K St. NW, Suite 700, Washington, DC 20005, Tel. 800-322-7844) or the Society for the Advancement of Travel for the Handicapped (347 Fifth Ave., Suite 6100, New York, NY 10016, Tel. 212-447-7284) about tours.

Car Rental

A dozen rental car companies operate at the airport and at many hotel locations (including Advantage Rent-A-Car, Advant Rent-A-Car, Avis, and Budget Rent-a-Car). Note that car rental is relatively expensive, and often does not include unlimited mileage. You must be 25 years old, hold a driver's license and major credit card. Road signs are in Spanish.

Time Zone

Equal to U.S. Central Time

Tipping

Tips in Mexico are generally 15%, tipping cab drivers is not expected, and tipping the maid in the hotel a couple of dollars a day (per room) is greatly appreciated.

Weather

The average temperature is 27° C (80° F) with more than 240 days of sunshine, and rain is rare. In summer the temperature goes higher, but an onshore breeze makes the climate enjoyable throughout the day.
